Troop 889 held a class to earn the Communications Merit Badge
In this class, we combined Requirement 6 and 7.b into one dual project.
Req.6. With your counselor’s approval, develop a plan to teach a skill or inform someone about something. Prepare teaching aids for your plan. Carry out your plan. With your counselor, determine whether the person has learned what you intended.
Req. 7.b. Create a Web Page for your Scout Troop. Include at least one article, one photograph, and one link to some other Web page that would be helpful to someone who visits the Web Page that you have created. If you decide to post the Web Page to the Internet, you must first share it with your parents and counselor and get their permission.
This is our finished Project! We hope you enjoy reading it, and maybe learn something from our clever Scouts!
Teaching Someone How To Make Origami Cranes:
I taught a fellow scout how to make a Japanese paper crane. The teaching was fairly easy, except for one step in the process. We worked it out together, and he made a nice paper crane. I used a set of instructions I printed out from the internet as a visual aid. In the end, I partially taught my friend how to make a paper crane. He also figured it out for himself!

Teaching Someone How To Make a Paper Airplane:
I taught the skill of making a paper airplane. The student learned quickly the skill of folding the paper. I used a piece of paper with lines on it to help show where to fold. It was funny when he threw it, and it hit someone! He learned very well. Overall, the teaching was a success!

Teaching a friend How To Use The Instinct Phone:
I taught a fellow scout how to use my Instinct phone. I thought that this would be a good thing to teach a friend because my friends always want to see my phone, but they don't know how to use it. When I handed my fellow scout my phone, he wouldn't know how to unlock it at first . Then, once I taught him how to unlock it (by holding down the unlock button for a couple of seconds) , he would be confused about how to scroll up and down. In learning to scroll the phone, I told him he needed to press down harder to scroll than he would to select an item. Teaching Someone How To Tie The Bowline Knot: I taught my mom how to tie the Bowline Knot on 1/4/09. I used a rope to help teach. First I worked through the knot and explained the steps. Then, I told her to try it herself, and after a few attempts, she was successful. Finally, my mom learned what I intended to teach her. My mom now likes to tie the bowline knot whenever she can!

Teaching Someone How To Play Dodge Ball: My teaching experience was very good. I taught my friend how to play dodgeball. When I was teaching, my friend seemed to understand it perfectly. I taught him how to throw and catch and he was very good at it. There was something funny that happened when I threw the ball at him. The ball nailed him in the head, and he fell over!

Teaching Someone How To Shoot a Nerf Gun: I taught my friend how to use a Nerf Gun. The gun and the nerf bullets were my aid. The target was also my teaching aid. My friend took the gun, placed a nerf bullet in the bullet spot, and shot it at the target. He succeeded. It was an easy task so, I eventually took the next nerf gun and shot it myself!

Teaching Someone How To Play Basketball:
When I taught, I taught how to dribble a basketball. My teaching aid was a basketball shoe, and I also used a basketball. The person did learn what was intended. We then went on to shoot baskets. We then played around for a while! I got the big shoe from a Rockets promotional that was going on. What they wanted you to do was to buy season tickets and you would get the other shoe to complete the pair.

Teaching Someone How To Throw and Catch a Football:
The skill I taught was how to throw and catch a football. It was a hard skill that you can always get better at. If you get real good at it, you might make millions! My teaching aid was a football. The person learned what I intended. We then threw the football around for a while, and we just had a lot of fun!

Teaching Someone How To Play Tennis:
I taught the skill of tennis to my friend. We used a foam tennis pro training ball. He quickly picked up on the skill and eventually was able to return my hit quite frequently. With this skill, my friend has now been able to play tennis in his free time. Now that he has completed the tennis forehand, I was able to move on and teach him the backhand. The backhand is not an easy skill to pick up. In the end he was able to complete the process and become a professional tennis player!

Teaching Someone How To Bounce a Ball on their Head:
I taught a fellow scout how to bounce a ball off his head! The ball was blue. My teaching aid was a dodge ball. It took several tries, a little cheating…, but finally my friend succeeded. It took approximately 6 tries to do it. The funniest thing that happened is that one time the ball bounced all the way across the room!

Teaching Someone How to Play the Guitar:
I taught my friend how to play “Smoke on the Water” on the guitar. I used my guitar and some guitar tabs to show him how to play. Guitar tabs are an alternate to music. They use numbers to show frets on lines that represent strings. He learned it perfectly, one because it was an easy riff and two he has experience playing bass. One funny thing happened, he posed for the camera when we took the picture!
